Mercedes SLS AMG 101
Mercedes-Benz has a new supercar known as the Mercedes SLS AMG. Mercedes has a brand new super car known as the Mercedes SLS AMG. With starting rates of about one hundred and eighty thousand bucks it is priced to compete with the likes of Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche. Aside from all the normal performance comparisons there is one element this super car has that the other cars don’t – the gullwing Mercedes is back. Entertainment: well, there is a 6.2 litre engine in the front providing a rumble to match nearly anything to come out of Detroit. With over 550 horsepower the SLS would be an entertaining drive even if the overall handling was poor. Luckily that’s not the case. It’s agile, poised and although its feels a little stiff on the highway the pairing of engine and handling offers a wonderful drive.
In terms of functionality the car is a bit of a mixed bag. Mercedes have clearly considered how this car is going to be used and the Mercedes SLS AMG incorporates standard functions to offer everyday usability like sat-nav along with a good stereo. Nonetheless the gullwings, as renowned as they’re, make it a pain to get in and out of the car, make the car very wide and also you really have to stretch to pull the doors down once you are inside. The motif also means headroom is relatively tight too.
The gearbox is a double clutched affair that works really well. There is a slight delay whenever you flick the paddles but overall it feels extremely sharp and responsive. The car is very obviously rear wheel drive. The seating position is very back and also harks back to honest, old school GT’s and combined with the razor-sharp steering you’ve total faith in where the front of the vehicle is going to go. This super car can go round edges really, really fast – in case you tried hard enough you could probably keep up with a 4-wheel drive 911 Turbo. It’s also blazingly fast in a straight line – very impressive for a weighty, front engined Grand Tourer.
Considering value for money – can any vehicle at this price be considered reasonable value? Probably not but put together with its peers it is well priced. Let’s look at it another way – against the Mercedes McLaren SLR, the SLS is faster, handles better and is much less costly to the tune of pretty much two hundred thousand dollars. So, the Mercedes SLS is indeed a loud and raucous matter dominated by the enormous powerhouse of an engine – yet at the same time civilized by the common high standards of usability and refinement that you would want from a Mercedes.
